July 2014 Race Results

As I have written previously, the road race schedule has been thin, with few and far between. Stark Velo members have not hung up their bikes, and packed it up for the summer. Many have found other forms of bicycle racing to keep their competitive juices flowing.

Jim Yankush and Rich Grella competed in the June 15 Eastern Time Trial Series in Deerfield, Ohio. Jim placed third in the Men’s 50-59 group, and Rich was fifth in the Men’s Standard group.

Bob Brnilovich raced the Welsh Hills Road Race June 22nd and claimed 4th in the Master 45+ race. A couple days later at the Ohio Senior Olympics, Bob placed 3rd in the Master 50-54 10k TT, following up with a win in the Master 50-54 40K road race. Other Stark Velo members also competed in the Ohio Senior Olympics. Bill Fletcher took 4th in the Men’s 60-69 20K TT on a fixed gear track bike. Greg English took his spot on the podium for both Men’s 55-59 20K and 40K road races with a third in both. Dale Seeds took 4th in the Men’s 65-69 40K road race. All team members qualified for the 2015 Senior National Olympics in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The July 4th Twin Sizzler Road Race in Medina has become the longest running, best attended race in the state of Ohio. Three teammates lined up for the early start. Matt Carson claimed third in the Men’s 55-59 group, Rich Grella was 8th in the Men’s 60-65, and Dale Seeds was 8th in the Men’s 65-69 race.

The Cleveland Velodrome hosted the Ohio State Track Championships. Bill Fletcher was the winner in the Cat 3/4 Omnium, with Marshall Leininger close behind in third. The Omnium consists of three races, Scratch, Miss and Out, and Points. Bill also won all the Masters TT races, the Flying 200, 500, and 2K Pursuit. Bill is also a regular winner at the weekly Friday night races at the Cleveland Velodrome. Over the July 4th weekend, Bill travelled to Illinois State Masters Track Championships, taking first place in the men’s 60+ Omnium, which consisted of a match sprint,500 TT, and 2 k pursuit. His time in the 500 TT was .6 seconds faster than 2nd place. The man he beat was the 2011 and 2012 World and Master Champion. Bill is ranked nationally as first in both the 2 K pursuit and 250 TT.

Dave Jolin raced the USA Cycling MTB XC Nationals in Pennsylvania, taking fifth place and a podium spot in the Masters 55+ race. Scott Morman took first place at the Funk Bottom 200 K gravel road race. Both Dave and Scott compete in the National Ultra Endurance Mountain Bike Series, and are both ranked in the Top 10. Next race on their schedule is the Wilderness 100.

The regional OMBC mountain bike series had Paul Donatelli racing the Reagan Park MTB TT, taking 5th in the Sport + race. Rick Parr, and his daughter Evelyn competed at the Battle of Turkey Run MTB race near Zanesville, and did very well. Rick took second in the Sports Master race, and Evelyn won the Jr.9-10 race.

The summer season is drawing to a close, but a number of cyclocross events have been scheduled for the autumn season. The schedule can be viewed at www.neocx.com or on Facebook at NEOCX.
