It seems as though the summer race season has passed us by like an eighteen wheeler on a downhill run. There were only a few races scattered about, but Stark Velo members tried to make the best of the opportunities.
The Eastern Time Trial Series hosts five events on a monthly basis during the season. The August 17th race saw every Stark Velo member that raced stand on the podium. Jim Yankush claimed 2nd and Bob Brnilovich 3rd in the Men’s 50-59 group. Tim DeRosa won , and Rich Grella was 3rd in the Men’s 60-69 event. Tim also claimed first in the Men’s 60-69 race on September 21.
The annual Smith Dairy Milk Road Race in Orrville, August 10, had several members racing over the beautiful Wayne county roads. All of them raced the Masters 40+ class, with Jim Yankush placing 5th, followed by Rick Parr13th, Bob Brnilovich 16th, and Gene West 22nd.
While the road schedule has been spotty, there has been plenty on the schedule for mountain bikes. The Reagan Park Time Trial on July 19 saw Jake Walters take 5th in the Expert Category. Jake raced August 3rd at Lake Hope State Park , Race to the Hills, finishing 3rd in the Pro-Expert category, the following week, August 10, Jake raced the NEO Crankfest at Westbranch State Park and bettered his previous week by one, taking 2nd in the Pro-Expert race.
Dave Jolin and Scott Morman travelled to Pennsylvania on July 26 and raced the Wilderness 101 race, part of the National Ultra Endurance Mountain Bike Series. Dave took 5th in the Masters race, and Scott was 34th in the Men’s Open. The Men’s Open regularly has up to 150 racers. The Shenandoah race August 31 in Virginia saw Dave finish 8th in the Masters race, and Scott 48th in the Open race. The final race for the year in the series was the Fools Gold , held in Georgia on September 20th. Dave took 5th in the Masters, and Scott 21st in the Open race. With this year’s series completed, and final points tallied, Dave finished 6th overall in Masters, and Scott 14th in Open. These are outstanding results in a very grueling series.
The change of the calendar from August to September ushers in the cyclocross season. Marshall Leininger got a jump on most by racing the Lionhart CX in Cincinnati on September 7th, placing 5th in the Masters 55+ race. The opener in the NEOCX series was September 14 at Kenneth Sims Park in Euclid. Scott Morman raced two races, placing 8th in the Single Speed class, and 9th in the Cat. 3 race. Chris Smith took 8th in the Master 35+ , Marshall Leininger 6th and Dale Seeds 15th in the Master 55+. Rich Grella took a distant 19th in the Cat. 4 race.
The cyclocross schedule is full through November, with races available both days on most weekends. Cyclocross is the fastest growing discipline in USA Cycling, with large race fields. The first race in Euclid had over 300 entrants.The next few months promise some exciting races at some demanding venues. Results will be posted as they become available.
