Tue 8.05.08: Race results for the Zoar Road Race (permit #1975) have been submitted to USAC. This online gallery contains several photos from the race, courtesy of Mike Schiltz. The Times-Reporter of Dover-New Philadephia was also on hand and took some nice photographs. Robert Sroka [Lake Effect] has a couple of videos from the women's field at his weblog and a gallery of photos.
Sun 8.03.08: The Zoar Road Race took place today in Zoar, Ohio, under perfect weather. Around 120 riders participated in the sixth edition of our race, which went pretty smoothly thanks to our volunteer corps and officiating crew. We appreciate the support for our race and thank every one who participated. We'll get the full results posted within the next day or two, but the following is a quick summary of the results.
Brian Batke [Team Columbus] repeated as the Zoar champion in the cat. 1/2/3 field. Brian was in a decisive two man breakaway with Thomas Dominic [Spin], who finished second. Shawn Adams [Lake Effect] took the field sprint for third.
Fifty-one riders participated in the cat. 3/4 race which was a battle of attrition. There were several break attempts, but the race ended in a bunch sprint among the remaining riders. Darin Shriver [unattached] won, followed by our own Erik Lesco and Collin Snyder [Trails Edge]. Chris Smith was fifth. Also participating for Stark Velo were Don Bunker and Matt Turi.
Samantha House [Elves & More NEO] pulled off a solo escape for the win in the women's field. Whitney Sevenno [PS Hersey Cancer Institute] was second, and Erin Quinlan [Elves] completed the podium.
In the cat. 5/citizen's race, the action was hot from the start and the field was reduced considerably on the first lap. Justin Ling [Jeni's Ice Cream] won in a bunch sprint among around ten riders remaining in the front group. Brian Alford was second and Joseph Holmes third. Racing for Stark Velo were James Votaw and Mike Dieringer.
Sat 8.02.08: Our sixth annual Zoar Road Race is tomorow. We paid our dues to Mother Nature last year and tomorrow's forecast is sunny, 81F and light winds from the North; beautiful weather for a road race. Although online registration is now closed, you can still register at the race and there is no additional fee. Hope to see you tomorrow in Zoar!
Tue 7.29.08: The Tour of Welsh Hills road race, originally scheduled for this Saturday, August 2, has been postponed due to the road conditions. The road surface is reportedly pretty rough with fresh chip & seal.
Sadly, we received email confirmation that the Summit Freewheelers Fall Challenge Road Race has been canceled. Last year's edition was held on September 9.
Sun 7.20.08: Online registration for the 2008 Zoar Road Race, Sunday, August 3, is now available at this link.
Thu 7.18.08: Results from last Thursday's race at The Chapel Cycling Series have been posted at the event website. It was a great race again tonight.
Results from the Shreve Chiropractic Cycling Challenge have been listed at USAC. See this link.
Wed 7.16.08: We rode the Zoar racecourse last night. Schneider's Crossing, the second leg of the circuit, has been freshly paved this year... smooth and fast!
Mon 7.14.08: Here is a brief race report from Mike Dieringer, who finished in sixth place at Shreve on Saturday.
A quick tour of the blogs turned up additional Shreve race reports from Ray Huang [Torelli] and Dave Steiner [Snakebite], who both raced in the cat. 2/3 field. We echo Dave's disappointment regarding riders littering gel packets on the race route. Sometimes it only takes one irate resident along the course to end a great event. Show some respect and put trash in your jersey pocket!
Sebastian Birch completed Etape de Tour last week in France. This year's route covered stage 10 (completed today by the Tour), including the Tourmalet and the Hutacam. Here's a photo of Sebastian on L'Aubisque, which he climbed on another day. He reports that Etape was an epic day in the mountains with rain, poor visibility due to fog and cold temperatures.
Congratulations to Team Lake Effect on their strong showing at The Chapel Series last Thursday. Lake Effect raced aggressively throughout the A race. The winning three man break included Pete Baughman and Shawn Adams [Lake Effect] who finished first and second, respectively. Our own Erik Lesco completed the winning trio and took the last podium spot. Come and enjoy the fast and technical training criterium at The Chapel in Green this Thursday. See this link for race information.
Sun 7.13.08: Our 6th annual Zoar Road Race is Sunday, August 3. This event takes place on a scenic 10-mile loop near the historic village of Zoar, OH. The circuit includes two significant climbs. We're awarding $1,800 in prize money. See the flyer at this link. Online registration will be available soon.
On Saturday, July 12, several members raced at the Shreve Chiropractic Cycling Challenge. It was indeed a challenge with a rolling hilly course, hot weather and talented fields. Marjorie Parr convincingly won the women's field, riding solo for most of the race. Rick Parr, Erik Lesco and John Lowry raced in the cat. 2/3 field. A large break of six or seven riders went early with Torelli and Lake Effect well represented. The break tore apart on the final lap and Matt Weeks [Lake Effect] won in a close 2-up sprint from Tris Hopkins [Torelli]. Erik and Rick finished well among in the splintered field. Matt Turi raced in the cat. 4 field, which was won in a long solo breakaway by Nate Loman [Allied Decals]. In the cat. 5 race were James Votaw, Greg Banic, Mike Dieringer and Dale Seeds. Thanks to Shreve Chiropractic for supporting such a well organized event!
