The Zoar Road Race took place on Sunday, August 8, and was a great success again this year. Thank you to all of our volunteers and participants for a safe, competitive and enjoyable event!
In the cat. 1/2/3 field, a four-man break consisting of Paul Martin [Lake Effect], Mike House [Sharper Image], Ryan Rish [Savage Hill] and Stefan Kadar [PVR] gradually put a sizable gap to the field after attacking near the end of the first lap. Martin exploded the group with an attack on the final climb and rolled across the line for a convincing win. Next to finish was House, followed by Rish and Kadar. Jeremy Grimm [Savage Hill] won the field sprint for 5th. Mike Gorman represented Stark Velo, and raced well, finishing with the second chase group.
Samantha House [Stark Velo] won the Women's field with the help of teammate Mary Ellen Bailey, who finished 3rd. Mary Downing [Cyco Dot] was 2nd.
Erik Lesco [Stark Velo] won the cat. 4 field with strong support from our cat 4 team, with Jeff Basler visible at the front for much of the day. On the last lap, Rick Parr drilled it leading to the last climb, where Don Bunker took over the pace-making, stripping the front group of many riders. Lesco won the sprint among the 17 riders remaining in contention. Patrick Steckman [Snitgers] was 2nd, Sean Easley [Big Bang] 3rd. Stuart Hamilton and Matt Turi [Stark Velo] completed the top five. Also racing for Stark Velo in the cat. 4 field were Carl Peshoff and Brett Charville.
The Junior's field was won by Megan Walkowiak in a 2-up sprint with Ryan Bunker [Stark Velo]. Shane Williams was 3rd and Drew Bercaw [Pista Elite] 4th.
The cat. 5 field was won by Vince Kish [Bicycle Stop]. Jeff Francone [Orrville] and Randy Brown [Savage Hill] filled out the podium. Stark Velo's top finisher was Scott Brunner, who placed 10th. Racing with Scott for Stark Velo were Jim Flesher, Sebastian Birch and Dale Seeds.
